- Just mentioning the one 68000 emulator I had actually seen in action (except the
- one in the Mac OS)... Of course hand-coded assembly would be faster but then we
- arrive at the situation I described below.

- Macs are different in that they have always been agonizingly slow compared to an
- Amiga with the same processor. I suspect that they *do* disable the cache to
- allow self-modifying code; at least I've heard that an early design flaw in the
- OS makes it more or less inevitable in certain cases.
-
- That, of course, would make all the difference. According to some benchmarks,
- a plain A4000/040 @25MHz (with its crippled memory subsystem) running
- ShapeShifter compares to a 33MHz 040 Mac. And then there's this maniac who
- likes to play Doom in full-colour and sound on an expanded A1200...

- Uh, no thanks. Can't bear to be around those things, even for a few seconds.
- I've had my share of the 8-bit era and I can't help being reminded of it when I
- see a Win95 shell, or "undocumented opcodes", or what-have-you. They may have
- souped up their Z-80 predecessors and their kludgy CP/M clones to high speeds
- and a colourful (yet still remarkably distasteful) UI's but as a user and as a
- CS student, I can't help being revolted by the sheer inelegance and overpowering
- antipathy of the whole mess.
-
- Before you say it, I did look at Windows 95 but it didn't really stand up to the
- "beating" I gave it. Only later did I realize that the "beating" wasn't really
- outside my everyday working pattern.
-
- As an analogy, heavy smokers tend to be less sensitive to offensive odours.
- When I enter a crowded "smoking" train compartment I am somtimes greeted by an
- overpowering mix of sweat, cold ashes and other unpleasant smells. The majority
- may not notice and even find the atmosphere perfectly breathable, but I just
- have to get out of there. Fast.
